Fault Lines

Just got back in from Arizona (where we had a fantastic little meeting), and I actually have had problems logging into the backend of WP to add to the blog because of some weird programming thing. All better now (I also have to give a shout out to LivingDot.com, where this blog is hosted — surprisingly inexpensive but an even more surprising commitment to responsive, and actually helpful, customer service.)

In any event, there was a great discussion in the comments to the previous post over association-speak, mediocrity, and tension between members and leaders of an association, particularly between Jeff DeCagna and Sue Pelletier.

No Offense

David Brooks on Harriet Miers this morning: (subscription required)

“In the early 90’s, while she was president of the Texas bar association, Miers wrote a column called ‘President’s Opinion’ for The Texas Bar Journal. It is the largest body of public writing we have from her, and sad to say, the quality of thought and writing doesn’t even rise to the level of pedestrian. Of course, we have to make allowances for the fact that the first job of any association president is to not offend her members. Still, nothing excuses sentences like this: ‘More and more, the intractable problems in our society have one answer: broad-based intolerance of unacceptable conditions and a commitment by many to fix problems.’”

I have nothing to say about the Miers nomination (at least not on this blog) but Brooks’s column made me cringe.

This week, the 100th issue of our organization’s free e-newsletter will hit the streets. It’s very different from when it started because we didn’t know anything 100 issues ago! I probably still don’t, but having now generated hundreds of new members through email newsletters and sold tens of thousands of books, I think I’ve picked up a few things. (And yes, to the blog-faithful out there, I still am a huge proponent of email marketing, even over blogs.)
