Sam Phillips is a singer/songwriter of quiet intelligence and mystifying obscurity. Her next album, “Don’t Do Anything,” will finally be released on June 3 and I can’t wait. Here’s a video for one of the new songs. And, here’s an older song with an admittedly cheesy video from 1994 (this song somehow showed up on the soundtracks of a few ’90s romance movies and I can only imagine the producers never bothered to listen to the lyrics).

I love Sam Phillips! She is a fantastic songwriter. Some little-known facts about her that you probably know already:
–She used to a be a contemporary Christian artist and was known as Leslie Phillips.
–She’s married to T-Bone Burnett (or at least I think she still is).
–She played a terrorist in one of the Jack Ryan movies
So close! Actually she and T-Bone Burnett divorced a few years back. Her new album is the first Burnett hasn’t produced. And the movie she was in was Die Hard 3 — she played Jeremy Irons’ mute assassin girlfriend.
