Random Conversations in Bars
Posted by Kevin | Print This Article
A few nights ago I was with some friends at a bar having a few drinks and chewing the fat. Another guy at the bar joined our conversation, and at one point, a Netflix commercial came on TV.
“That’s an interesting service,” the guy said. “The person who rented my apartment before me had a subscription and he never changed it so I’m still getting all his movies.”
“Wait,” I said, “you mean, he’s still paying for Netflix service at that address, and he set up a queue of movies. You get a DVD, watch it, send it back, and then get the next one on his list?”
“Exactly,” he said. “It’s pretty sweet, except for one thing. His taste in movies totally sucked.”
And that, my friends, is the long tail at work. No matter who you are, somebody else thinks the movies you like totally suck, even when they get to watch them for free.
