Fault Lines

Just got back in from Arizona (where we had a fantastic little meeting), and I actually have had problems logging into the backend of WP to add to the blog because of some weird programming thing. All better now (I also have to give a shout out to LivingDot.com, where this blog is hosted — surprisingly inexpensive but an even more surprising commitment to responsive, and actually helpful, customer service.)

In any event, there was a great discussion in the comments to the previous post over association-speak, mediocrity, and tension between members and leaders of an association, particularly between Jeff DeCagna and Sue Pelletier.

I have lots of thoughts on this topic which my earlier post on “am I a bad member?” was starting, but right now I have just a quick question. Sue and Jeff had a back and forth over whether or not members should demand more, or leaders should provide more. Assuming that “leadership” means what it usually does — volunteer leaders — my question is:

How much responsibility belongs to the association staff? Not just responsibility to change … but responsibility for what exists now?
